Blog Comment Issue
Well, thought I was getting ahead in my Business by cracking down to get the Profit Pulling Platform up and tested the night before it was due, and when the date was extended, that was time for me to get going on this Blog.
I had already set up Domain and hosting right after Module #1, but hadn’t done much beyond that. Every free moment went into the blog and its background functions thru plugins and widgets, and I finally shook off the fear to do some writing, which I was subconsciously putting off I guess.
On the eve of Module #4 of Alex Jeffreys coaching I found some things out.
Turns out my hosting side was the problem as it disliked my Permalink Structure : (/%postname%/). Changing to default eg: (/?p=123) somehow got the comments functioning, but created another problem with search engines not liking “? or =”, etc.
I found a Plugin called Deans Permalink Migration that safely changes the Permalink structure without breaking old links to site, and doesn’t hurt your Google Rank (it basically auto-redirects the old links).
I thought, how cool, but had trouble with hosting again because they don’t use Apache, meaning they don’t support ability to have a .htaccess file which is needed for this to work. As Module #4 was in progress I was moving my Blog hosting from Yahoo! to Hostgator, great deals by the way.
I did the setup routine, installed WordPress 2.7 (I like the new ability to install plugins directly), and waited for propagation. A tutorial I was looking at stated not to shut down the original hosting until the one is where you want it, but propagation was not happening so I went and deactivated the original after saving the entire site through Ftp, and pages/WordPress settings as HTML for future reference.
The next day I could see the Blog in default but could not login to WordPress to start working on it. OOPS!, I realized I forgot to deactivate WordPress at Yahoo! before I shut the hosting down and this created some kind of conflict with my new login, so I tried with my old login and it worked!!
Now that was scary, but I have it back closer to where I want it, and learned a few other lessons along the way, grabbed a couple tips from other student Blogs like Eoin O’Leary’s who has a lot of SEO experience, so watch him.
Now it’s time to get back to the task at hand of working on Traffic. I may not take the contest this time, but watch out, here I come!
Clay here
Thanks to a “Heads up” from Christine Howard that my Comments were not working, I did some tinkering and found that my Theme changed the Permalinks to a Custom setting. I changed to Default and tested by commenting myself and all is good.
So the Moral here is “Test your Comments Link after you make your first Post”.
Not a lot of time today but I did manage to add my first page called “Students” where I will be adding the Students of Alex Jeffreys as I verify the Links and leave a comment.

Hi Clayton,
Thanks for the mention, I’m going to have to catch-up next week, as I had to spend pre-christmas looking after my clients.
My traffic building will be going into overdrive soon.

Adam: Thanks for adding me and I’ll watch for your Videos.
Joe: Thanks for stopping in, no I’m just starting out and “Failing Forward Fast”, but pretty soon I’m going to “almost” know what I’m doing. I saw your new Talion Theme and it looks great, Paula Brett found how to lose or replace the Coffee Cup Image. She’s becoming quite the Techie with Blogs.
A great Community is forming before our eyes.
Eoin: Thanks again for the Technorati Tips. I’ll be back for more.
To Alex Jeffries, his Team, and all my fellow Students,
You are my inspiration!
Here’s to a Productive 2009 for all!

Hi Clayton, Thanks for twitting me, though I've not much to tweet about yet. I am another Alex Jeffreys student, but haven't got off the ground yet. I often work very long hours and when I do get time to work on the course, I am tired and my feeble brain soon reaches overload. So what is apparently simple goes haywire and hampers my progress.
For example, when I published my ABOUT page, it came up on my Front Page. When I tried to move it, I ended up losing the About tab altogether. When I tried to fit a mic so I could ask Alex questions, I somehow lost the ability to get on the internet for a day. I have got around that, and think I have the mic working. But I fell asleep during Module 5 before I had the chance to test it!
Anyway, your blog looks great. Clear and easy to read. I hope to get one like it. And I hope I don't have the problems you had, because your solutions have me bamboozled!
I can see you will do well. All the best,
Mat Gallaugher

Hey Mat!
I know what you mean, only so much time in a day.
Maybe the Beatles knew something we don't, Eight days a week, I L………..
Keep failing forward, don't get discouraged, and try not to gauge yourself against other students as I did at first as there are quite a few with years of experience compared to us who have just begun. I did that at 1st, and gave up, realizing that I just need to work at my pace and I'll get there.
Just head to the member area and re-listen to the Module while doing some work on the blog.
Put the kettle on, I'm coming over for a Tea!

Clayton,
Thanks again for the very helpful letter you sent me. I hope you got my reply (I am never sure if I have pressed the right button.)
I think it is a great idea to put on the kettle, so I am just going to do that now. After all your help, you have certainly earned a tea. But I live in Bristol, England, so it might be a bit stewed by the time you get here!
Still, with a bit more coaching from Alex Jeffreys, we'll soon be able to afford to visit our fellow students all around the world. I am looking forward to that.
And when you get here, I will be able to give you a good tour of the city – I sometimes guide on the Open Top Tours here.
Cheers,
Mat
