If you wanted to voice your opinion via the web, you had to start your own webpage, but they were difficult to construct without programming experience and costly to run and hire professionals to create them.

Remember watching TV in the early 90’s and seeing PC’s and Laptops appear more and more? It’s rumored that the world’s first blog started with Doogie Howser M.D. the teenage doctor whom you would see regularly making entries in his computer diary.

Blogging is a trend that started around 1997 and has become one of the most popular forms of communication on the web with hundreds of thousands of bloggers posting and reading every day.

That was then, this is now!

A Weblog or Blog for short is a personal online journal or website with a series of online posts that run in reverse chronological order so visitors will see your latest Post right up at the top. Comments run latest 1st also, but there are plugins to change the order if you choose.

There are no limits on what you can do with a blog.

You can write about your personal experiences, daily events, political views, books, favorite hobbies, television, or share photos, videos, music, and well, anything you want with people all around the world. Oh Yeah! You could make a few bucks doing it too!

Blogs allow readers to comment with their opinions, add more useful content, or ask questions, which in turn draws more interest. This communication between the blogger and reader is much more personal than just reading words on a regular website.

As you add valuable content and respond to reader comments on a regular basis people will feel comfortable and want to return again and again. Some readers will visit each day and even subscribe through an RSS Reader or email and more often than not, contributions from your readers can be fuel for future Posts.

Some of the most popular blogs are ones by people who enjoy just posting about everyday things and events in their lives. It’s a lot of fun to be able to express your opinions or share information with people, and it can be a great stress reliever as well.

Blogging is simple but not easy. A blog is simple to setup and run in a short time without webmaster skills allowing you to start with nothing, building and learning as you go for free, or at little cost. Blogging is not easy because you are in it for the long haul and must keep the fresh content coming so your followers stay interested.

Blogs are constantly changing with every new post and comment added so search engines favor them over standard “static” Websites that mostly remain the same. Because search engines like Google favor updated and changing content blogs get indexed very quickly as in hours and days compared to regular sites at weeks and months.

I added a post for a competition one evening and was pleasantly surprised to find on Google page 5 the next day with a good portion of 500 students all trying to Rank for the keyword phrase “alex jefferys”.

It is no wonder that corporations, small business, and marketers have shifted to blogs because they are so flexible and can generate income in any number of ways like Adsense, Advertisers, Affiliate Programs, and your own products.

What’s next? A little setup and you can post using your email program and also have prewritten posts published automatically at timed intervals. You can also integrate social capabilities such as Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, Bloglog and others on your blog.

Even cooler than that, now we have Mobile Blogging (moblogging) for when your away from your PC. You can use your cell or other mobile device to publish content on any blogging platform with Mobile Posting capability while on the go in real time.

Add a plugin or two to make your blog Mobile friendly and also optimized for viewing your blog on mobile devices.

I first heard of blogs at an Internet Marketing Bootcamp back in 2005 and I wonder why I didn’t start back then, and where I would be now if I had just taken action.

 If you made it all the way to here you must be interested in starting your own blog so just take action and get it going. You will learn as you go, just remember it is simple but not easy.

Now you can help yourself through helping others while creating a strong online presence, branding yourself, and using your blog creating an income if you choose to do so.

Well the Alex Jeffreys Coaching course is coming to a close with a call tonight featuring Andrew Fox and our last Module is tomorrow night.

That wont be the final end though as there will be more brainstorming sessions etc as Alex plays a roll in continuing to get us moving toward success.

Jim Gallagher was the far and away winner with over 41,000 visits!

My number was 106L and I just passed the 1000 milestone a couple days ago with 1050 as I write here today.

Gary Simpson got this around Feb 3 as shown in the video.

I had started on page 5 and dropped to page 26 after tinkering and slowly got back to page 5.

A few days ago I found myself on page 3, and today that post is nowhere to be found on the first 20 pages

 Where did that post on list building go? Well got to about page 46 and gave up. Maybe Google gave it the slap down!

Also as I searched Google US, Canada, UK, and Australia today for alex jeffreys I found my post about Maria Andros on Bonus Module #1 as my highest ranking at UK on page 19.

Today Gary Simpson is at #24 on page 3. This must be due to upwards of 500 students jockeying for position but through all this the most interesting is sallys-ebooks on page 1 before we got in on the act and she is still there now.

Kudos also to Steve Harold and I think JJ&Jason with improfitlaucher who have both been holding steady on the first page since soon after the competition started.

With this in mind I have resigned myself to back up and work at my own pace focusing on the task at hand before punching forward.

In the early going Alex started with a recent trip to Disneyland where he bumped into an old buddy named Matt who ended up surpassing him in Internet Marketing and how they looked around the park with a view on Marketing.

He talked about the Three Little Pigs and how we should be building strong foundations in our businesses like the Third Little Pig’s brick house that the wolf couldn’t blow down, focus on building “The List”, keep the content flowing, and write our own eBooks.

This reaffirmed my recent thinking to back up and just concentrate on adding valuable content here that can help others and expand that into an eBook of my own to offer for free.

I know it’s been done a million times but I am focusing on Blogging and the use of it in Building an Online Business. I have new page called Blog Checklist started where I am documenting with short description, the steps toward this goal and then I’ll expand on each as Posts and/or an email series and ebook.

Once I have the content where I feel comfortable, and oh yeah, a logo for use on the Header, ebooks, business cards, etc, that’s when I’ll move to heavy traffic getting, list building, video work, etc.

So further on Alex reemphasized on lessons learned so far and how it is simple, but not easy. Create your own ebook for giveaway to build a list, create a squeeze page for it with autoresponder setup, Market the book, nurture the list, and make money from it.

The Triple Threat Affiliate part is very powerful and the reason Alex got that nickname from Andrew Fox after showing it to him. He explained about using Auto Responders as a Series sent at timed intervals once someone is on the list and Broadcast messages for Marketing upcoming launches of products, etc, and how to set them up.

As for the Triple part you send your initial broadcast to the list, and after a couple days check Aweber stats and split the list into three groups, opened mail and clicked the link, opened the mail and didn’t click, and didn’t open the mail group. Next send a targeted email designed for each of these groups to improve click through rate. You could do it again with nine new emails after that. Pretty powerful stuff huh?

I stripped all the standard code from the sidebar box templates in the theme editor such as Recent Posts, Popular Posts, Archives, Categories, etc. My reason for this is to make it easier to rearrange the placement of the boxes by using all Widgets. I had no problem physically moving the code around in the theme editor but if something goes wrong and I forget to save the original first it could get pretty dicey.

Instead, I can click and hold the mouse, and drag the Widgets around when I want to rearrange things without worry of messing anything up. I tinker by nature and can spend too much time when I could be doing more productive things so this is one little way to work smarter and faster.

Now I really like this theme but it is a free one and I’m sure a lot of people use it, heck, more than a few of my fellow Alex Jeffreys students are using it so I broke out my trusty colour spy tool and attacked the stylesheet in the theme editor. All you do is click and hold the eye dropper and drag it around the page to the colour you want and it shows the 6 digit code. To brighten things up and bring some uniqueness to it I changed the sidebar box background to white and simplified the colour scheme using the title text blue (003366) for all the borders, underlines, and the top toolbar, along with some sizing changes. Yup, there goes Clay tinkerin again!

To top things off I have something in mind for a banner so I’m going to enlist my Artist sister to draw up some stuff for me that I can submit to get graphics done. Some free outsourcing, yippee! I decided the plan is to have a logo made up for The Marketing Canuck (Canuck is slang for Canadian), that I can use for the Header, Business cards, eBooks and other Products, etc, etc.

One thing I had some trouble with was the Comment section. In my travels around some blogs I saw some nice looking setups that turned out to be Disqus, Intense Debate, JS Kit, and SezWho. These all look great and I ended up installing Disqus with the thought of the social benefits but I found it a bit cumbersome to use not to mention yet another login.

I lived with it for a while but began having second thoughts from things I read in the forums about Disqus having ownership of the comments and people losing comments after uninstalling. They have comment exporting but we are not able to import into Wordpress. Being worried about this I saved all my posts complete with the comments.

I uninstalled Disqus and deactivated the plugin and found I lucked out because I still had all my comments, a little messed up but still had them. I tried out SezWho since that system doesn’t take ownership of comments but didn’t like all the code changes required and I don’t want to have a bunch of extra work if I decide to change the theme. So I said goodbye to that.

Now I’m back to the default Wordpress comment system and simply dressed it up a bit with plugins. It’s not as pretty as I would like, but it works.

I tried a plugin called WP Captcha Free that not only didn’t work here, it stop the comments from working. It’s too bad cuz with this one you didn’t have to struggle to read the letters in the submit box that I find annoying. That’s OK though, Akismet does a good job of catching the spam and I just delete it.

I had the Alex Jeffreys Free List Building Ebook post up right after he laid down the gauntlet and found myself on page 5 next day. I poked around at the top sites, tweaked keywords and description, added links to Alex Jeffreys, and dropped to page 24, darn it!.

Does Google look unkindly upon too many alterations in a short time period, or could it be other Students publishing Posts, and the fresher content is more favorable? I let it be for a while and continued setting up Social accounts like friend feed, stumble upon, delicious, dig, identa.ca, linkedin, reddit, and propeller. I also set up an account at Ezine articles but they didn’t like my 1^st article attempt so I have to get back on that.

I am publishing this post to see if fresh content get’s me back up in the search for alex jeffreys.

I have done nothing on the video competition yet, “shame on me”, and now I have my FlipMinoHD, but no idea’s yet except a short welcome to my blog video tested with a stick post to see if it will stay up top.

I’m kinda thinkin with Video Marketing gaining momentum (about a third of all searches now), JJ & Jason, and Steve Harold got that extra boost to land 3^rd & 4^th on the first page as I look now, so I better get in gear, and so should you.

As of now I actually crawled back up to the bottom of page 6 so my idea about messing about too much may indeed be part of the puzzle, so this post will go up and not be touched and we will see what happens in the search for alex jeffreys tomorrow.

Now previously in Module #4 we began working more to get traffic to our sites. Alex Jeffreys generously put up $1000 to the person who got the most from Dec 17 thru Jan 3 proven by Google Analytics. I was out of it before it began knowing we have a lot of talented folks in our group with years of experience. I needed, and still need more time with WordPress and building value in content.

And the winner is …….. Jim Gallagher at http://kotobot.com who blew everyone away with over 41,000 visits to his site. That is truly amazing to me and my 106 visits, so congratulations to Jim, and by the way, Alex Jeffreys brought up the phrase kotobot during Module #1 which stands for “Keep on Top of Being on Top”.

Friday’s Module #5, Traffic Tornado’s was outstanding as Alex showed us more of his personal techniques and ideas for getting rankings, the main one being to find your competitors, study what they are doing, and surpass them. Because of his desire to see that we all succeed, Alex Jeffreys has opened up his purse strings again to the tune of $4000. That’s incentive enough for me!

$1000 goes to the first Blog to the top of Google when searching for Alex Jeffreys. I put up the Post “Alex Jeffreys Free List Building Ebook” last night and found myself on page 5 today. Not good enough so I pulled one of the top 1^st page sites into HTML Kit, found some different keywords and description and incorporated those into my post to see if I move up at all. Adding links to Alex Jeffreys may help also, and will be tomorrow’s tweak.

Next we have to produce a Video and promote it on YouTube, and me without a Camcorder, duh! So $1500 will go to the most original video, and $1500 to the Video that gets the most traffic. I am looking to get my hands on that new FlipMino HD unit, but it’s not in Canada yet, so I’m buttering up my brother in the US to order me one. Come on Vince, call me back!

I started off by embedding my first Video!

I was at Garry Parkes site to complete step4 (This Post) and when I clicked on an open area of this Video which brought me to viddler.com where it is hosted, selected embed this, chose options - Simple Player, Auto Play, 545X323, copied the Code in the window, selected HTML Tab on this new Post, clicked enter a couple times to leave room to add this blurb in, did a Save Draft, hit Preview, and presto!, video on my Blog.

My only concern is if the Host drops the file is history so I want to investigate self contained Audio/Video for future projects.

Can you believe it! The launch of the second edition of the ‘Profit Pulling Project’ Newsletter is this, the first week in January 2009. It’s nice to have my son Clayton home for a bit too. He’s doing his thing in Toronto now after Graduating from Humber College in the spring. Clay was approached by Toronto Dominion Corporate and is now in a position as Law Clerk.  Proud daddy here!

Our homework from Module 4 of Alex Jeffreys Coaching is to ramp up efforts to establish our blog traffic. So far, I’ve been continuing to find fellow Students, comment on your Blogs, and then activate your Links on the Blogroll, and add you on my Student Page. I have a work sheet for doing this and can send it to you if you like, just ask. I have about 280 names so far and one trick I figured out was to scroll through the Webinar box showing who is listening in so I can at least get your name on my list.

I have also begun to set up some social media accounts around the Net and in our Student community. Accounts I Have so far are:

The Fortunate 500 is a Forum for fellow Alex Jeffreys Students to pop in and say Hi, ask for help, and help each other, because you can’t do this alone people. It is hosted by fellow Student Thomas Northrop so come on down and fave me there (Clayton Moore).

Twitter is pretty cool, you can follow me there as Clayton_Moore, and I will follow you. I plan to direct message fellow students with an invite to visit here, and vice versa.

My Facebook account (Clayton Moore) is active with my Profile setup and a few pics.

Technorati could give your blog a big boost in traffic from interested visitors, since they will have already seen what your blog is about while reading in Technorati. Go claim your Blog as I am doing right now by publishing the confirmation Code in this Post.
Gotta go back now to Complete the claim. FYI I tried claiming right when I signed up and it just kept crapping out so I waited a day or so and it’s all good now. Oh yeah, I pasted the code near the bottom of this post, and my posts are Threaded so it didn’t work because it didn’t show on the front page, so I pasted the code at the top and the Claim went through.

There’s a ton of stuff to do, but bit by bit we will all get there.
